N.L. Central Preview

Alright let’s go to my second divisional preview for the ever so fastly approaching 2009 season. Here is the N.L. East Preview just in case you missed it.

Hitting

  1. Cubs
    • The Chicago Cubs were far and away the best hitting team in this division last year. They averaged 5.3 runs per game, that’s a half a run more than the Cardinals, who finished second in this category last year. Geovany Soto, Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, and Alfonso Soriano will put up more great numbers this year. The only thing is that there are a lot of injury risks in that lineup, but they are deep enough to compensate.
  2. Cardinals
    • The Cardinals averaged 4.8 runs per game last year, near the top of the ranks in the National League. There’s really only one thing you need to know about this offensive unit, and that’s Albert Pujols. Aside from him, they weren’t looking that great until Ryan Ludwick and Rick Ankiel had great seasons at the plate, and now their offense looks great. Troy Glaus is going to struggle with injuries this year, but that’s not enough to shake me from naming them second in hitting in the 2009 NL Central.
  3. Brewers
    • The Brew Crew had 90 wins last year, party because of CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets, but the offense did enough to compete with the rest of the league last year. They have a lot of young guys that are now in or entering their prime, which makes me believe that this offense could have its best season in recent memory. Prince Fielder is one of the best home run hitters in the league, Ryan Braun is just one of the best hitters in the league, and they have great role players in Rickie Weeks, JJ Hardy, and Bill Hall.
  4. Astros
    • There is a big drop off here between the Brewers and the Astros. 3 of Houston’s best hitters (Lee, Berkman, Tejada) are all over 32. Michael Bourn and Hunter Pence are exciting players. Bourn can run faster than most Kenyan Olympians, and Pence just does everything well. However, I see way to much risk to say this offense is going to put up good numbers this year.
  5. Reds
    • Well the Reds gets the nod over my Pirates at the cellar of the division here. Look, the Reds are a pretty good looking team. They have a lot of young guys with big upside. Joey Votto could really break out this year, and he is the Reds best offensive threat. The Reds will definitely continue to feel the effects of losing Adam Dunn last year. Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce are there to provide good bats with a good amount of power, but this lineup is lacking in a lot of aspects still.
  6. Pirates
    • It kills me to do this, really, it does. However, the Pirates have the worst looking lineup in the last 5+ years, I’m not going to lie. McLouth and Doumit are great hitters, but there really is nothing behind them to get excited about. Andy LaRoche is having a nice spring and could put up good numbers this year, but he’s unproven. There are guys with good upside, like Brandon Moss and then some minor leaguers that the we could see up this year, but it’s pretty obvious we are still the worst offense in the division. Maybe next year.

Pitching

  1. Cubs
    • The Cubs led this division in most pitching categories last year as well, making them a very solid team. Their rotation is definitely going to take a step backwards this year, but not enough to knock them off of the top ranks. Carlos Zambrano is slowing down, Rich Harden is always injured, and you want me to believe Ryan Dempster is going to repeat last year’s numbers? I’m not buying it. However, these 3 all have the chance to be elite pitchers, and any time a team has that chance, I’ll take them. They take the top spot by a slight margin.
  2. Reds
    • I really struggled with this one, I just about took them to be first. Volquez, Harang, Cueto, Arroyo, Owings, and Bailey all have huge upside. Harang and Arroyo are proven veterans, and the other 4 are young guns with great arms. This has the chance to easily become the best staff in the Central, and even challenge to be one of the best in the majors. However, until I see Volquez and Cueto repeat their successes, I can’t put them on top quite yet.
  3. Astros
    • Well the 1-2 race was close, and so is this 3-4-5. I’m giving the Astros a slight advantage here. They have a proven ace in Roy Oswalt, who I think will have a great season. Wandy Rodriguez is set to have the best season of his career, and then there’s Mike Hampton, Brian Moehler, and Russ Ortiz. The back end is kind of weak, but definitely not terrible. Enough to earn the 3 spot.
  4. Cardinals
    • This Cardinals vs. Astros vs. Brewers is so tough. The reason I’m taking the Cardinals here is the resurgence of Chris Carpenter. He has looked great in spring and is really healthy. I think he could return to his former state as a dominant ace. Even if he doesn’t, they have a solid ace in Adam Wainwright, and a decent back end with Pineiro, Lohse and Wellemeyer.
  5. Brewers
    • A young staff with a lot of upside. Yovani Gallardo looks like an ace. Dave Bush could be a very good pitcher. The back end doesn’t look too hot with Jeff Suppan, Braden Looper, and Manny Parra, so that’s the real reason I had them 5th here. The rotation is solid enough to team with that great offense and ead them to another good season, and probably another 2nd place finish.
  6. Pirates
      • Another tragedy. The Pirates rotation is worse than their offense. This was a no brainer. The Pirates would be bottom 3 if I did this for the entire National League. Paul Maholm is the only thing that is sure in this rotation. He’s a stud. After that, there is a bunch of crap, with a little bit of upside. I’ve pretty much given up on Zach Duke, and Ian Snell is heading down that road as well. The upside comes with Ohlendorf and Karstens. Ohlendorf has been spectacular in spring, and Karstens was awesome last year with the Pirates. However, they have also both shown very bad stretches, and with the Pirates history, I’m not taking the upside to the bank quite yet. I wish I could say there is help coming from the minor leagues, but there really is not.

So here’s my final standings for the 2009 National League East:

    Chicago Cubs…………………..90 – 72
    Milwaukee Brewers………….. 89 – 73
    Cincinnati Reds…………………80 – 82
    St. Louis Cardinals…………….79 – 83
    Houston Astros…………………77 – 85
    Pittsburgh Pirates……………….71 – 92

March Madness – MLB Style – Final Round

#1 Yankees vs. #3 Rays

Alright well it’s the final in the stupidest tournament ever made. One of my least favorite teams against one of my favorite teams. Two teams that win in different ways. The Yankees win by throwing money all over hell, and the Rays win by drafting well and developing talent to fill it’s big league squad. The Rays have done an amazing job over the last 5 years to assemble the club they have now. The sky is the limit for this team, if all things work out well, they will be a significantly better than last year’s team, which won the AL championship. I love the Rays, there are really no weak spots on this roster. Their bullpen could improve slightly, but it’s not really needed because their starters go so deep into games. The Yankees are loaded as well, we’ve gone over this in the past rounds. However, the Yankees have that unique ability to choke in the  playoffs. Because of this fact, and this fact only, I am taking the Rays to defeat the Yankees in my March Madness MLB Style Tournament. The Tampa Bay Rays Take The Tournament.

Now that that is over, let’s get back to my favorite thing : some Pittsburgh Pirates baseball.
Pirates Recap:
Today the Pirates defeated the Cincinnati Reds 6-5. Paul Maholm started the game and earned his second spring win. Maholm pitched another 6 scoreless innings, throwing less than 75 pitches and only surrendering 3 hits. His spring ERA is now down to 0.46, outstanding. The bullpen did its best to blow that win, but in the end they came out with a victory. Matt Capps pitched one inning and gave up 2 runs. Jesse Chavez pitched an inning, gave up 4 hits, and 3 runs (2 earned), and Craig Hansen finished out the game and earned a save after a 3 walk 9th inning in which he was centimeters off of walking in the tying run. Joey Votto looked at a borderline 3rd strike to end the game. As for the offense, Nate McLouth his his 3rd home run of the spring and Ramon Vasquez hit his first. Ryan Doumit had a nice day at the plate, going 3-3 with a run scored. Nyjer Morgan and Eric Hinske added RBI hits to seal the deal for the buccos. They are now 13-8-2 in spring, looking pretty good.
The Wonder That Is Homer Bailey:
Another thing I was anxious to see today was Homer Bailey. The Reds #1 pitching prospect took the mound today, battling for the 5th spot in the rotation. He is 22 years old and has unlimited potential. Today Bailey pitched 4.2 innings, gave up 3 runs on 4 hits, walked 2 and struck out 4. Two of those runs came on a 3-2 fastball left over the heart of the plate to Nate McLouth, who appropriately relocated the ball into the parking lot in right field. Bailey has had a nice spring, and now has a nice looking 2.45 ERA. I think he has a great shot at winning the #5 spot in the rotation and having a great season there. I wouldn’t be surprised if Bailey has pitched his last minor league baseball game, barring injury. Why not put him up there? There’s little risk, he’s not going to have much pressure on him pitching in the 5 spot behind great pitchers in Aaron Harang, Bronson Arroyo, Edinson Volquez, and Johnny Cueto. That’s one heck of a rotation.
Baseball’s Best Rotations:
Alright well I don’t have much time, and I’m not going to put that much thought into this, but I’d just like to name a couple of what I think are baseball’s best rotations. Here we go, in no particular order, and I’m sure a list that will be missing a couple of teams that deserve to be on the list:
  • Cincinnati Reds – Just went over this.
  • New York Yankees – Sabathia, Weng, Burnett, Chamberlain?? Wow.
  • Tampa Bay Rays – Kazmir, Shields, Sonnanstine, Garza, Price
  • Arizona Diamondbacks – Webb, Haren, Garland, Davis, Scherzer
  • Los Angeles Dodgers – Billingsley, Kershaw, Kuroda, Wolf, Weaver(?)
  • San Francisco Giants – Lincecum, Cain, Johnson, Zito, Sanchez
  • Los Angeles Angels – Lackey, Santana, Saunders, Weaver, Moseley
I’m kinda pushing it with the Angels, that rotation isn’t anything too special, especially this year with that injury to Santana. So those are my top 7 off the top of my head. If you think I left anyone off, leave a comment.

Rolling Along!

The Pirates played their first Sunday game of the year yesterday, and didn’t disappoint. After a terrible start from Jimmy Barthmaier, who surrendered 3 runs on 2 hits and walked 3 in two innings of work. The rest of the pitching staff picked him up, giving up only 1 run (thank you Sean Burnett – who also got the win), striking out 3, and only giving up 3 more hits. The offense was led by Nate McLouth, who hit his first spring homerun and 3-run form to put the Pirates on top for good as part of a 5-run 5th innings. The bullpen did the rest from that point and put up all 0′s, giving the Pirates a 6-4 win and a share of first place with a 4-1 record.

The Pirates are in action as I type here against the Reds. They’re down 1-0 now, Jonny Gomes drove in Brandon Phillips off of Daniel McCutchen. Zach Duke pitched 2 innings, giving up 2 hits, striking out one, but keeping the Reds off the board. It’s not looking good right now for the Pirates though, as they have only collected 1 hit, to Cincinnati’s 6.
Now, let’s take a look at some of spring training’s week 1 studs and duds.
Studs :
  • Shelby Ford :  The young Pirate second baseman has started hot this spring, hitting .444 with 3 hits, 2 runs, a home run, 3 rbi, and 2 stolen bases, all of this comes in 5 at bats.
  • Pedro Alvarez : The highly touted Pirates prospect has gone 3 for 7 (.429) with a 9th inning RBI double against the Red Sox, a .500 OBP, and only 1 strikeout.
  • Paul Maholm : Paul only pitched 2 innings this week, but they were a great 2 innings. He struck out 2 and did not give up a hit.
Duds :
  • Andrew McCutchen : The possible future face of the franchise has started off just awfully in 2009. He is 0/12 with 7 strikeouts. He’s been on base only twice, but he did swipeone base.
  • Adam LaRoche : A real shocker here (not!), Adam has collected 2 hit in 9 at bats, which isn’t all THAT horrible, but he has stuck out 5 times, which you never like to see.
  • Jesse Chavez : Chavez has a dismal 13.50 ERA, pitching 2 innings, giving up 6 hits and 3 earned runs. He has struck out 5 batters however.
While I was typing that, the Pirates added the tying run in their 6th inning, as Ryan Doumit (finally) gets a hit and drives in the hopeful catcher, Jason Jamarillo.
On another note, I added to my MLB Player T-Shirt collection today. My Brandon Webb and Travis Hafner shirts came in the mail. This is a new collection. so I only have 5 shirts so far. They include : Brandon Webb, Travis Hafner, Adam LaRoche, B.J. Upton, and Nate McLouth
